Cindy Crowell grew up outside Burlington, VT and has been painting & drawing her entire life. She is mostly self-taught. Over many years Cindy has experimented using watercolor, pastels, pen & ink, and oils. As a child she received weekly group art lessons, and sold her first paintings as a teenager.
Formative experiences influencing Cindy's ideas included visiting many prominent galleries as a child, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, the National Gallery of Art in London, and the Hood Museum at Dartmouth College. At the University of Vermont, Cindy's physicist father encouraged her to study Mathematics, which she did along with Elementary Education.
Upon moving to Long Island as a young adult, Cindy worked as a teacher. Later she worked in management & instruction for the Early Learning Centre. As an independent research contractor, Cindy assessed Adult Attachment Interviews for psychological studies at Stony Brook University, Harvard University and the University of North Carolina. She began to re-explore her interest in painting when her children Ben & Alli were growing up. Later, with mentorship from local artist June Adinolfi, Cindy started exhibiting her oil painting works at Gallery North (2004-2009; 2018) in Setauket NY, The Long Island Museum (2018) in Stony Brook NY, and the Eisenhauer Gallery (2003-2004) on Block Island, RI.
A significant neck injury (which affected her right hand & arm) slowed her down around 2009 . After surgery in 2012, Cindy slowly regained her ability to use a paintbrush for an extended period of time. She is delighted to be painting again.
